Wooden Outdoor Furniture in the Modern Lifestyle

Wood being one of the oldest building materials has been used for centuries to construct various types of furniture. Over the past thousands of years craftsmen have diligently honed and mastered woodworking skills which have been passed down through countless generations. In the world today however, many of the furniture that we previously only made in wood are now built using all kinds of materials such as metals, plastics, fabrics and composite materials. Machines have also replaced many of the tasks that craftsmen had to do manually from the processing of the raw materials straight up to the finished products. Machine made products are now done in mass production plants and are sold cheaply since the human interaction factor has been minimized and thus reducing a lot of the operating costs.

Wooden furniture that has been handcrafted by master craftsmen are however more expensive, but this gives the owners of such furniture more satisfaction knowing that each wooden furniture in their possession are masterpieces that have been created with the most effort and dedication. This is one of the reasons that crafted wooden furniture are in great demand, especially if the craftsman is one of good reputation and these furniture can demand prices as much as the buyer is willing to pay.

The Cost of Quality and Excellence of Craftsmanship

Wooden outdoor furniture is generally more expensive than any plastic or metal furniture. It, also usually requires somewhat regular maintenance (mainly a new paint coat or varnish every few years and occasionally re-gluing of shaky joints). However, the saying "you get what you pay for" does really sheds some light on the quality and craftsmanship of each wooden piece of furniture. For a bit more in price, you get a much better piece of furniture to show your class. In some societies it is important to have furniture that has been crafted by hand by highly reputable craftsmen as this gives a certain stature within the community and without such furniture could be a downfall.

Hand made Piece by Piece.

In this age of new technologies, almost nothing is made by hand anymore. Food, clothes, electronics and automobiles are all created by machines. Even wooden outdoor furniture is created with machines, however an expert human hand guides each masterful stroke and cut to synergize the artistic flair of the human mind with precision of the machine. A lot of people still don't realize the sheer number of the different types of wood that can be used to create just about anything the mind can think of. Wood has properties that allows the skilled hand to shape it piece by piece to be crafted into masterpieces that can be duplicated with metals and plastics but with less variety.

Wood comes from hundreds of different species of trees, each type of tree with unique properties and different in so many ways which gives it beauty and elegance in many forms. Plastics and metals can be manipulated, painted and cast to look exactly like its wooden counterparts, creating the same look of natural beauty with slight differences but in many ways the same.

Making the Choice

The choice of whether to go for wooden furniture, or metal, plastic or synthetics, depends entirely on the needs of the individual and the purpose for which the furniture is to be used for. So when choosing the furniture to decorate your outdoor living space, the choice of wooden outdoor furniture should be able to suit any needs and tasks while providing the feel of class in the area it is to be placed. The decision to choose whether you would buy the more expensive wooden crafted furniture, or the metal or plastic replicas, which look the same is in most cases a matter of cost. Cost itself does not deter many people since they like buying the more expensive furniture anyway, so it comes down to the purpose of its use.

Parties, barbeque's and outdoor gatherings require the use of furniture, however the frequency of use is the limiting factor in determining the material of furniture required. If you can afford the wooden furniture, by all means buy it, however for the ones on a tighter budget then perhaps the choice of plastic or metal replicas may be the sounder choice since its purpose of use is also prone to damage and the cost of maintenance would be higher if true wooden furniture were to be used.

You make great points in your hub about the quality of much of the mass produced wood furniture on the market. Much of it has lost the character of the wood. When shopping for outdoor furniture such as a log swing, it's important to look for manufacturers that use reclaimed wood rather than wood that has to be chopped down. Reclaimed wood including cedar logs looks best when it's been naturally aged.
